Among the many cybersecurity challenges associated with protecting the power grid, two of the most challenging are maintaining an accurate asset and communication inventory and performing security monitoring of devices at the grid’s edge. Not only are these capabilities fundamental to comply with federal regulations and avoid fines, they also help ensure security, safety, and reliability. This presentation will highlight how utility asset owners are leveraging passive network security monitoring methods to gain real-time asset inventory capabilities in control centers and substations, assisting with NERC CIP regulatory reporting requirements as well best industrial control system security practices.
